Enthusiastic Greetings! He loves to say, “Hi!,” “Hello!,” and “How are you?”
Switching back and forth between his high-pitched (excited!) voice and his low-pitched (suave) voice

Being asked where his yellow feathers went
Hula has a somewhat unique story! He was actually born here at Free Flight in 1995, under the wonderful care of our founder, Dr. Robert Stonebreaker. He was adopted at 8 years old in 2003, by a wonderfully loving owner who cared for him for as long as she could. After she experienced a decline in her health, Hula’s previous owner felt that the best option for Hula was to find care once again in his original home here at Free Flight. So, he officially rejoined our resident flock in April 2025 - and we’re delighted to have him back!
Visually, Hula’s striking appearance makes him easy to differentiate from our other “large red birds.” Unlike most scarlet macaws, Hula doesn’t have any yellow on his wings! It’s an unusual feature, but we find that it makes the blues on the ends of his wings really pop! If his appearance doesn’t catch your eye, though, he’s sure to grab your attention with his enthusiastic greetings!
